The Resai is a living god. A position created by the creation gods with the intention of overseeing and protecting the people of Reme, the title of Resai is passed on seemingly at random to equally random individuals. There are only ever two of these godly beings at any one time: the current one and their heir. Heirs are born, not made, and much like mahar they are born with a birthmark that sharply contrasts their skin, though unlike with mahar, the Resai’s birthmark is always somewhere on the top of their head, and affects any hair, scale, or fur above it. The heir must defeat the current Resai in order to take the title and full power. Once defeated the former Resai’s birthmark typically fades to a mid-tone and they lose approximately 85% of their power, leaving them about ten times as powerful as a normal being. If they live through the defeat that is. Since the Resai is a living god, they are effectively immortal until replaced by an heir.
The Resai currently rules from a palace central in darkside called Taliesin which, as well as being a home base, acts as a magnifier of the Resai’s power, giving them magical access to the entirety of darkside. In fact, the power of the Resai is so tied to the palace that most of it is stuck to the palace itself, and leaving the palace grounds significantly reduces the power of the Resai to the point that it is reduced to the levels of a former Resai. One Resai, refusing to be trapped in the palace, left the grounds and travelled as far away as he could. He was so underpowered that he was accidentally killed by an avalanche without an heir, throwing darkside into chaos.
Taliesin itself is huge. The main palace is central to all outlying buildings. It contains the Resai’s tower (the private rooms, labs, and offices of the Resai), the throne room, the library, a few guest rooms, the staff quarters, palace guard quarters, main kitchen, the armory, the main stables, the main blacksmith, and most other functions to keep the palace running as well as extensive gardens and a huge dungeon under the palace itself. There are various other wings for visitors, garrison for army, and a farm on the grounds, though these are all at least two miles away from the main palace. Taliesin grounds cover over ten thousand acres which contains two rivers, woodlands, meadows, farmlands, and a myriad of gardens, streams, and ponds. The boundaries of Taliesin grounds are marked by large standing stones with symbols carved into them.
