"Oh, I'd get the book back when I wanted it." Dyami said with dry confidence, finishing the page and looking up to meet Teak's eyes. "I assure you."
"He would. Especially if it's an old one." Taman said, looking amused. "He's as protective of his books as dragons are of their gold, and about as dangerous when riled."

Taman sent Anath a look. "You take all the fun out of teasing people, you know that?"
Aidan finally finished the page and turned it. Dyami briefly skimmed the page and then glanced up again. "This one appeared to be rather accurate when I bought it."
Taman sent him a look. "Clairvoyance is cheating."
Dyami smirked. "But it makes finding things so much easier."

Teak glanced at Dyami and wisely decided the other man wasn't exaggerating. "Well, can't say I blame him. I wouldn't give up any of my books, old or otherwise."

"But taking other people's books, you have no problems with that." An said dryly.

Teak shrugged. "Not particularly, no. I don't mean to keep them, it just sort of...ends up like that sometimes."

Anath smirked. "It's a skill." He exhaled a cloud of smoke. "Besides, I am spared having to listen to you and Teak bickering this way. For a little while, anyway."

Dyami sent Teak a look, but didn't say anything further about it.

"Taman likes arguing."
"/I/ like arguing? Which one of us ends up in jail at least twice a year?"
Dyami smiled, glancing downwards as Aidan turned another page. "That's different. The people I argue with thoroughly deserve to be corrected. They just happen to own jails is all."
"Of course you would say that." Taman said dryly, standing. "Anyways, I'm now feeling more tired than argumentative. Good eve."
Dyami watched him go, then glanced at Aidan. "I imagine the smoke is gone, would you like to finish your story upstairs?"
Aidan moved his big blue eyes from the page. "Will you read it to me?" he asked, milking his cuteness for all it was worth.
"Sure." Dyami said absently, not looking at the display. He stood, dumping Aidan gently onto the floor. "Come on then."
Aidan closed the book and trotted after him, waving to Anath and Teak. "Will you read it from the beginning?"
"Why not." Dyami said amiably, tilting his head to Teak and Anath before heading up the stairs, Aidan hot on his heels.

Anath returned the nod and stood up, stubbing out his cigarette. "Sleep sounds like an excellent idea, I'm going upstairs myself." He glanced at Teak, still engrossed in his book. "Are you coming, or were you just going to read all night?"

"Tempting, but I'll go up, too. If I stayed down here all night the staff would throttle me." Teak pointed to the man slouched at the front counter, who did indeed look like he was more than ready to end his shift for the night. Carefully closing his book, Teak followed Anath up the stairs.

Anath was up the next morning while the sky was still dark, but starting to lighten at the edges. Teak, oblivious, slept on as Anath quickly got dressed and slipped out of the room and down the stairs, wanting to get to the park he had gone to the other night before the sun began to rise.

Aidan grumbled in his sleep and turned. Dyami sighed and lifted his book until the boy finished shifting. "Why did you let him fall asleep in your lap?" Taman asked from across the room.
"If there isn't someone very near or touching with him while he sleeps he has nightmares." Dyami said, watching Aidan to see if he would wake.
"You shouldn't coddle him." Taman told him drolly, turning the page of a newspaper he had snagged yesterday.
"I'll coddle him as much as I like"
"You didn't coddle me."
"You didn't need coddling."
"I still can't believe you carried him downstairs."
"I don't like the room." Dyami grumbled, then glanced up as Anath entered from the stairs. "Good morning, Anath." He said in mild surprise. He glanced out the window. "... Very early morning."
"Maybe he gets up at the crack of dawn to pray." Taman grumbled. "But, hey, look, he DIDN'T wake /his/ friend up and make him come."
"Well, considering how often you pray and meditate when I'm not around I imagine you need as much as I can stuff into you. You don't need that much sleep anyways."
"Bitch."
"Bastard."
"Slut."
"Whipped."
Their entire argument occurred in subdued tones, without much infection, and without looking up from their reading materials, more a thing of repetition and rhetoric than actual dislike or even annoyance.

Anath glanced over at Dyami and Taman in mild surprise, not expecting to see anyone else up this early. "Ah, good morning. It is indeed rather early for most people." He noticed Aidan's prone form on Dyami's lap, but didn't bother to comment, paying more attention to the quickly lightening sky. "As a matter of fact, I AM on my way to pray, and I would like to start before the sun rises." Anath said, eying Taman warily. "So, if you will excuse me, I am sure I will be back before Teak gets up."

Taman raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure you don't want to drag him along out of spite?"
"It wasn't out of spite." Dyami said mildly. "It's good for your soul. What's left of it." He glanced up. "Don't let us stop you. We'll still be here, and still be doomed to hell." he said cheerfully.
"Why do you pray if you think you're going to hell?" Taman growled.
"Think?" Dyami asked mildly. "I've been told repeatedly."
"I hate you more and more with each passing minute."

Anath returned the look. "I think I'll pass, thanks. Complaining has a tendency to ruin the prayer atmosphere." He paused for a moment at Dyami's statements about hell, but aware of the sun's position in the sky, made a mental note to discuss it further later. "Fair enough. I should not be gone terribly long." Anath slipped out the door and over to the park before he could be distracted further and resumed his place on the rocks he had found the previous night.

Finished with his prayers, Anath straightened up and headed back to the inn. He nodded at Dyami and Taman as he sat down and quietly ordered a mug of tea. "Still down here, I see."

"He still doesn't like the room." Taman said flatly.
Aidan peeked over the arm of the chair next to Dyami look at Anath. "It smells bad." he added in Dyami's defense. "Hi." He added as an afterthought.
"Like opium?" Taman asked dryly.
"No." Both Dyami and Aidan said simultaneously.
Aidan bit off a piece of beef jerky from a chunk he was holding. "Can we go to breakfast now?" he asked in a pitiful voice.
"We should wait for Teak." Dyami told him absently. "Besides, you have enough food squirreled away to feed a small army. Eat that."

Anath tried unsuccessfully to hide his amusement at Dyami and Aidan's reaction. "Yes, I can imagine a bad smelling room would be unpleasant. Perhaps the management would give you a new one?" Anath glanced at Dyami. "It IS barely past dawn still." He reminded him. "I cannot see Teak rising too soon, if Aidan is hungry you might as well go without him. I doubt he'll mind."
